According to state history, the 1870s were difficult years for the residents of Meigs County. A national depression was deeply felt in this agrarian community and many people left during this period.
At the age of nineteen, Christena married John Casel Hayes, April 11, 1878, in Tennessee. They remained in Meigs country for approximately four years before moving to Arkansas.
Christena died in 1933, at the age of 73. She is buried next to her husband, John Casel Hayes, and her father, Joseph Truston Haynes, in Barling Cemetery, in Sebastian County, Arkansas.
At the time of her death, she resided at 1622 South 16th Street in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The cause of death was noted as "organic heart trouble."
