OTHER FAMILY INFORMATION:
Benjamin6 Lanier (John5, John4, John3, Clement2, Nicholas1) was born Abt. 1711 in Surry County, Virginia.

He married (1) Elizabeth Warren 1737, daughter of Allen Warren and Ann Hart. She died Abt. 1775.

He married (2) Lucy Pennington November 26, 1776 in Brunswick County, Virginia.

He married (3) Martha Wilkinson April 28, 1783 in Brunswick County, Virginia.

Lucy Pennington (BIRTH 28 OCT 1742 Brunswick, Virginia; DEATH 29 JAN 1801 Giles, Tennessee) daughter of William Pennington (BIRTH ABT 1717 Surry, Virginia; DEATH 23 FEB 1784 Brunswick, Virginia) and Mary.

Notes for Elizabeth Warren:
Many Surry County records are missing; none have been found which would prove the parentage of Benjamin Lanier's wife Elizabeth, but circumstantial evidence is strong that she was a Warren. From the Bible of her son Nicholas Lanier comes the most convincing evidence. Nicholas names his first child for his wife's father, George Malone Lanier. His second child for his wife's mother, Sallie Bass Lanier (first wife of George Malone); his third child Elizabeth Warren, undoubtedly for his mother who was Elizabeth and his fourth child was Benjamin for his father.

SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA FAMILIES:
Benjamin Lanier was in Brunswick County by 1739 and bought land of his brother Bird Thomas Lanier in June of that year. He bought more land and, as time went on, this land was in Lunenburg County, then in Mecklenburg County. But every record of Benjamin Lanier, with the exception of his Will, is in Brunswick County. His Will was dated September 14, 1790 and proved in Mecklenburg County December 12, 1796. His Will is signed Benjamin "B' Lanier, probably to distinguish himself from several other benjamins. It could be for "Bird," but there is no explanation.

He married three times. His children were all by his first wife Elizabeth. He married second Lucy, the widow of Moses Pennington. (Marriage Contract Brunswick Deed Book II, p. 456, November 26, 1776.) He married third Ann, widow of Martin Wilkinson. (Marriage Contract Will Book 2, p. 136 May 1783.)

p. 303
Matthew Redding's first wife died about 1776 and he married secondly, Sarah, sister of John Aldridge, and died in 1783. Apparently when Matthew Redding and Elizabeth Lanier, his first wife, were married, Benjamin Lanier gave them a slave named Tom, who is listed with matthew Redding in the 1782 and 1783 Personal Property Lists. Tom later appears with Benjamin Lanier, and in his will of September 14, 1790, he gives and bequeaths Tom to his three grandchildren to be sold when Ezekiel Redding arrives at the age of twenty-one. Notes for ELIZABETH WARREN:
Information from the book "Lanier" by Louise Ingersoll.

Benjamin Lanier, son of John and Elizabeth (Bird) Lanier, was born about 1711 Surry County, Virginia; he married there about 1737 Elizabeth, probably the daughter of Allen Warren, Jr. and Ann Hart. Many Surry records are missing, none have been found which would prove the parentage of Benjamin Lanier's wife Elizabeth, but circumstantial evidence is strong that she was a Warren, the names of her children indicate Allen Warren Jr.'s family such as Allen, Jesse, Robert, Lucy, Sarah, and Elizabeth. From Bible of Nicholas Lanier, her son, comes the most convincing evidence; Nicholas names his first child for his wife's father, George Malone Lanier; his second child for his wife's mother, Sallie Bass Lanier; (first wife of George Malone); his third child Elizabeth Warren, undoubtedly for his mother who was Elizabeth; and his fourth child was Benjamin for his father. There were three other children named Lucy, Nancy, and William. Allen Warren, Jr. was the son of Allen Warren Sr. and the grandson of Thomas Warren of Smith's Fort in Surry County; in 1652 Thomas Warren built the first brick house in Virginia, which antidates Bacon's Castle, both of which are still standing. The house stands on land given by the Indian Chief Powhatan to John Rolfe when he and Pocahontas were married in 1614; their son, Thomas Rolfe, sold this land in 1643 to Thomas Warren.

Many believe that there was some type of relationship between the two families due to many legal documents that were witnesses by both families. Here is a copy of the Will of Thomas Marriott who was married to the daughter of Allen Warren and Ann Hart.

Will and Deed book Oct 21 1784 , W/P Aug 24 1789 (Brunswick Co. Va WB 5 page 316)

Moved to father's 630 acres on South side Meherrin River and Avent's creek in Brunswick Co. on Nov 3, 1750 acquired adjoining 476 from the Colony of Virginia and on May 11, 1754 bought a further adjoining 130 acres on Avent's Creek . He may have been a merchant as well as a planter . He sold a total of 630 acres in four transactions fron 1757 to 1770 : the remaining property was willed to children and daughter Sarah's children. Was also bequeathed land and slaves by father 's will in 1767, March , Ca. 1745 Brunswick Co. to Elizabeth Warren daughter of Allen Warren Jr. and Anne Hart (Ref. Trimble, American Origins, page 125-6)

Information shared by Gregory Warren Carter, compiled by Wayne D. Lanier:

Benjamin moved to Brunswick County, Virginia, soon after his marriage to Elizabeth and bought many acres of land, which later became Lunenburg Co. in 1764, this county became the new county of Mecklenburg. During the Revolution, Benjamin Lanier and his son Robert were among the many who signed the Oath of Allegiance. Benjamin Lanier gave money and supplies to aid the Revolution, and his descendants are eligible for membership in the D.A.R.

His will was dated September 14, 1790, and signed himself Benjamin B. Lanier, no doubt to distinguish himself from Benjamin, son of Thomas Lanier living is Sussex County and a young Benjamin, son of Lemuel Lanier living in Henry County. The will was probated in Mecklenburg County December 12, 1796.

Children as named in his will, except Elizabeth, deceased, but did name her children John, Lucy, Lemuel, Frederick, Benjamin, Jesse, Robert, Sarah, Nicholas, and Allen; Ezekiel, Rebecca, and Jincy Redding.

Elizabeth, his wife, mother of all his children, died about 1775; Benjamin's second wife, Lucy, was the widow of Moses Pennington. The marriage contract was dated November 26, 1776, Brunswick County, Virginia. Lucy died December or January 1781-82.

His third wife was Ann, widow of Martin Wilkinson; they were married on April 28, 1783, Brunswick County.

His will was dated September 14, 1790, and signed Benjamin B. Lanier, no doubt to distinguish himself from Benjamin, son of Thomas Lanier living in Sussex County; and a young Benjamin, son of Lemuel Lanier living in Henry County. The will was probated in Mecklenburg County, December 12, 1796. Children as named in his will, were John, Lucy, Lemuel, Frederick, Benjamin, Jesse, Robert, Sarah, Nicholas, and Allen. Elizabeth was deceased at the time; Benjamin's will provided for her children.

Who was she??? Several of the names of this couple's children are Warren family names and Louise Ingersoll used that as basis for her opinion that Elizabeth was a Warren and the daughter of Allen Warren, Jr. and his wife Ann Hart Warren and the granddaughter of Thomas Warren. There is absolutely no proof of this. It may be that if Elizabeth was a Warren, she was a Warren widow. The search goes on
