Bird, a red-cockaded woodpecker, became trapped in our garage and could not find his way out of the open door, large as it was. When he finally came down to the ground, exhausted, I took him outside and attempted to find him some water and food. But it was too late and Bird died in my hands.

I made a coffin for Bird out of a small box, and buried him in a nice place out beyond the retaining wall, not far from our beloved Beagle, Buckley.

Bird's grave is marked with a temporary cross made of sticks, but I plan to make a proper and more permanent headstone for him.

Although I knew Bird for only a few minutes, he touched my heart with his beauty and bravery. I thank God that not a sparrow falls without His notice, and surely not a woodpecker either.

Rest in peace, sweet Bird.
