Denver Ray Curtis Dies Following Long Illness
Denver Ray Curtis, 82, one of Winslow's fine Christian citizens, died Monday, Sept 5 in the Gibson General Hospital in Princeton. Mr. Curtis had been in the hospital periodically since suffering a stroke 17 years ago. He entered the hospital for the last time four weeks ago. In addition to his stroke he received a broken hip January 12, 1975. Born in Winslow, December 26, 1894, he was the son of Ulysses S. and Etta Richardson Curtis. He married October 13, 1934 to the former Mary Beadles who survives. He was a member of the Winslow General Baptist Church where he had served as trustee since 1928. He was a member of the Winslow American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Barracks of Pike County. During World War I he entered the regular army at Camp Taylor September 17, 1917 and served in France and Belgium. He received his discharge from the army August 1919. After his discharge from the army he began working at Ingle store at Muren where he had operated a store for a year before his tour of duty in the service. In 1922 he operated a store in Somerville, then in 1925 Ingle Company called him to Littles to the Ingle Company store where he operated this store until it closed. He then worked in a hardware store in Petersburg for his uncle Horatio Curtis. In 1930 Ingle Coal Company opened a general store in Glezen and called him there to manage it. When this store closed in 1940 he and his brother Elmer opened a grocery and general store in east end of Winslow near the school. Later Elmer sold his interest to their brother Joe. Denver with the help of his wife Mary conducted a successful business there until he suffered a stroke in 1963. Surviving with his wife Mary are two brothers, Paul and Elmer of Winslow; four sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Ethel) Hurt, Grace Curtis, Pauline Scraper and Mary Frances Curtis all of Winslow. Funeral services will be today, Thursday at 2p.m. at Winslow General Baptist Church with the Rev. Lendon Toms officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
