James was the son of John Thompson and (according to an unconfirmed source) his mother was Rachel Farley. Several records do confirm his father was John Thompson, Sr. who died June 1823 in Rich Creek Valley, Monroe County, VA (now WV). James was married on 29 Aug 1801 in Monroe County, VA (now WV) by Rev. Jacob Cook to Polly (Mary) Garten b 1779 d 1869 IN, the daughter of William and Mary (Goodall) Garten).
Whether James Thompson served in the Revolutionary War is unconfirmed. However, in the book, "A History of Middle New River Settlements and Contiguous Territory," James Thompson was listed as an Ensign in the County Militia of Monroe County when the new Monroe county formed its militia on 22 May 1799. James was age 22 in 1799 so it is possible. A 1931 biography of John B Thompson, a great grandson of James Thompson states, "The Thompson family were settlers in Virginia in the early Colonial period, and he had ancestors in the Revolutionary war."
In the Fall of 1823, James, Mary and their children moved from Monroe County, VA to Rush County, IN. James Thompson was liste as an original landowner of Rush County. He purchased land on 6 Jun 1823. James' farm must have been about a mile west on Hwy 244 of the Richland ME Cemetery (where he was buried). Probate Court Records of Rush County for the estate of James Thompson confirm that he died intestate on 18 Nov 1838.
