Juan was born and raised in Seguin.
He enlisted in the Marines 20 July 1953,at the
San Antonio Recruiting Office,at the age of 17
years,5 months and 11 days.
Juan served in North Carolina,Washington DC, Okinawa,Cuba,the Philipines,Hawaii,the West
Indies,Japan and the United States Embassies
in Iran and Santo Domingo.
Juan's last enlistment in the Marines was 14
December 1962,while he was aboard the USS
Cavalier.
Arriving in Vietnam,Juan and was assigned to
3rd Platoon,Lima Company,3rd Battalion,26th
Marine Regiment,3rd Marine Division.
During Operation Kingfisher,Lima Company
and various Marine Companies on Hill 48,
located 6 kilometers south of the Con Thien
Outpost,endured a vicious fight with the NVA
324B Division.
Thirty-eight Marines and a Corpsman died
during the fighting.Eight Marines from the
Gunny's Platoon died from mortar fire."An
RPG round hit Gunny Almanza on his helmet
and right shoulder behind his head.Everything from his neck up was gone,except for his face."
Juan was married and served his country for
14 years,1 month and 21 days.KIA#16,138.
Tour of duty date unknown.
He was 31 years,7 months and 1 day old.
Survived by his wife,Maria G Almanza;and step
-son;Al Rojas of 1818 West Summit St,San
Antonio,TX.
His father;Natividad Almanza of 1135 E Adams
St,Brownsville,TX.
His mother;Mary G Almanza and his sister;
Margaret of 214 South San Bernardo St,San
Antonio,TX.
His three brothers,Herman,Oscar,Jesse;and
two sisters,Janie Trevino and Margaret Barrera.
Funeral Services were conducted by the Max
Martinez Home of San Antonio,TX.
Juan was buried with full military honors 29
September 1967.
