John was a 1964 graduate of William Penn High School and had attended York Junior College during 1965.
He was a member of the Fourth EUB church and a Sunday School teacher, and had been a Explorer Scout with Troop 36. He had also been a lifeguard at Pinchot State Park.
John enlisted in the Marines 10 February 1966 New Cumberland, PA.
His father died March 1966. John didn't have go to Vietnam, but he did anyway.
Upon arriving in Vietnam, John was assigned to 2nd Platoon, Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
John died as a result of a massive skull injury from mortar fire and a chest wound from rifle fire, in the vicinity of Huong Hoa, at Hill 881N and 8 kilometers West Northwest of Khe Sanh Airfield, during Operation Beacon Star.
John was single and served his country for 1 year, 2 months and 23 days and was KIA #11,832.
Tour of duty unknown.
John was 20 years, 7 months and 1 day old.
Survived by his mother, Anna Louise Almoney and a sister, Victoria of 854 Wayne Avenue, York, PA.
Father was deceased, Victor E Almoney Jr.

An acre of land on the York Side of Pinchot Park was dedicated and named for Cpl John S Almoney, York Marine killed in action May 3 in Vietnam, at sunset last evening, at a service attended by about 75 relatives and park officials.

The Rev Melvin Geiman Jr, pastor of Fourth EUB Church, conducted the dedicatory services at Almoney Point.

He was the son of Mrs. A Louise Almoney,854 Wayne Avenue, and the late Victor E Almoney. A wooden plaque, placed at the point was made by Raymond Bubb, assistant exhibits technician for the Department of Forests and Waters.
