Investigator Cuauhtemoc Estrada was shot and killed while intervening in a robbery, near the intersection of 30th Street and St. Charles Road in Bellwood, while off duty.

Investigator Estrada was attending a Christmas party at the VFW hall when he stepped outside and observed an armed robbery taking place in the parking. He identified himself and was reaching for his service weapon when he was shot once in the chest.

He was transported to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

Investigator Estrada was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Cook County Sheriff's Police Department for 20 years.

Cuauhtemoc Estrada, 50 years old, passed away suddenly on Friday December 20, 2013. He was the son of the late Antonio and Vivian (Capetillo) Estrada. He was a loving husband to Rose Garza for many years. Adoring father to Daniel C., Araceli, Christina, and Desirae Estrada. Beloved brother to John, Anthony, William, Patricia Estrada, Cuitlahuac (Nora) Estrada, Rosa Izaguirre, Guadalupe Sarmiento, Vivian (Mario) Gallegos, and Cuitlahuac (Nora) Estrada. Caring Grandfather to Isis Theodora, Giana Rose and Esme Xochitl Estrada. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews as well as his In-laws Janie (Javier) Tapia, Elena (Juan Carlos) Quintanilla, Ernesto (Suzette) Garza, Maria (Dago) Molina, Patricia and Melina Santamaria. He was a dear friend to Richard Lopez as well many others.
Cuauhtemoc was a dedicated 20 year veteran of the Cook County Sheriffs Department. He served his country as a United States Marine and toured the Middle East in Operation Desert Storm as well as a tour in Panama. He was a former commissioner for the Village of Maywood. He dedicated much of his time to various VFW organizations as a volunteer. He was a loving father and a model citizen and his colleagues stated that he touched the lives of every single person he met.
Funeral will be Saturday, December 28, 2013. Family and friends are to gather at 8:30 A.M. from Russo's Hillside Chapels, 4500 Roosevelt Rd., Hillside, IL 60162 (between Mannheim and Wolf Road) to Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St., Chicago, IL 60654. Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 27, 2013 from 3-9 P.M.
