Charles was born to William Rainey Hughey, Sr. and Sophronia Caroline Guillum. His father was a Farmer, Dept Sheriff, Jailor, Horse Doctor, and Laborer. Charles had an older sister named Anna Louisa. His mother Sophronia died when Charles was only 11 years old. His dad then remarried to Rosaltha Guillum. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter (William Rainey Jr., Nellie, and Harry), making them Charles' half siblings.
Charles grew to manhood in Oswego, Kansas, and here learned the printer's trade in the "Independent" newspaper office. He advanced to the position as foreman and held this position for many years. Later he published newspapers at Scammon and Carl Junction. In any capacity that he filled he was faithful to his trust. He was kind-hearted, loyal to his family and adhered firmly to his convictions of right and duty. Charles married Constance Caroline Ardley Blenkarn (born in Nottinghamshire, England) on 17 May 1888 in Wabaunsee, Kansas, USA. They lived in Cherokee Territory for years. They had eleven children.
One child, Karl, preceded them in death at age 20 by an accidental shooting with his father's .38 caliber gun.
Charles died at the age of 48 after a very short illness developed into pneumonia and pleurisy, leaving his wife to raise their children with the youngest only 2 1/2 years old. At this time he was working at Afton, Oklahoma, but was returned to his home in Pittsburg, Kansas, where he was able to see all of his family before passing on. For a time Charles served as district manager of the "Woodmen of the World" and that order conducted the funeral services at the undertaking rooms in Pittsburg. Charles was quite musical and played the drums. This musical ability was passed on to his children. His son Melvin even played the drums in Nashville, Tennessee with the Grand Old Opr'y. At the time of his death, the eldest son was away serving in the Army and could not help his mother with needs at home. She never remarried.

Has broken out somewhere
And won a little fame.
6) But put them all together,
Then take a chunk of chalk,
And mark it down, that Kansas
Can beat them in a walk.
7) Rain-makers used to run the sky,
To wet the crops and flowers,
And Kansas was the authoress
Of artificial showers.
8) For 'twas freaky Kansas
Did Nature's laws disdain,
With Kansas punctured with clouds
To get a little rain.
9) It is generally conceded,
By those who dress precise,
That as makers of the fashion
Gay Paris cuts the ice.
10) But Kansas ever eager
To give the earth a shock,
Sent Simpson down to Congress,
Without a single sock.
11) When women suffrage howlers
Were disturbing public peace
They found a husky leader
In Mary Ellen lease.
12) And where did Mary spring from
When she struck out to roam?
Of course it was in Kansas
She left her happy home.
13) And then came Preacher Sheldon
With his printer's ink and glue,
To run a Kansas paper
As Jesus Christ would do.

Charles grew to manhood in Oswego, Kansas, and here learned the printer's trade in the "Independent" newspaper office. He advanced to the position as foreman and held this position for many years. Later he published newspapers at Scammon and Carl Junction. In any capacity that he filled he was faithful to his trust. He was kind-hearted, loyal to his family and adhered firmly to his convictions of right and duty. Charles married Constance Caroline Ardley Blenkarn (born in Nottinghamshire, England) on 17 May 1888 in Wabaunsee, Kansas, USA. They lived in Cherokee Territory for years. They had eleven children.
One child, Karl, preceded them in death at age 20 by an accidental shooting with his father's .38 caliber gun.
Charles died at the age of 48 after a very short illness developed into pneumonia and pleurisy, leaving his wife to raise their children with the youngest only 2 1/2 years old. At this time he was working at Afton, Oklahoma, but was returned to his home in Pittsburg, Kansas, where he was able to see all of his family before passing on. For a time Charles served as district manager of the "Woodmen of the World" and that order conducted the funeral services at the undertaking rooms in Pittsburg. Charles was quite musical and played the drums. This musical ability was passed on to his children. His son Melvin even played the drums in Nashville, Tennessee with the Grand Old Opr'y. At the time of his death, the eldest son was away serving in the Army and could not help his mother with needs at home. She never remarried.
