Bob and his wife, Alice, were missionaries in Ghana, West Africa for many years. Rev. Charles Keen, friend of Rev. Bob Hayes, said that Bob "often spoke of the irony that a city boy from New York would be called to a village of 3000, a half a world away. When time came for baptisms they would swat the water to scare the crocodiles away. There, under the most primitive of circumstances, he cared a legacy from which the stuff missionary history is made. His ministry embraced the globe though his travels and bearing precious seed work."
Bob an Alice had two children:

Their son John married his sweetheart from boarding school and they had children. Their family returned to Ghana as missionaries. Bob and Alice's daughter, Sarah, also returned to Ghana as a single missionary to work with the children. They continued the work of there as a team.
On August 12, 1998 while being escorted to the airport for the ride home, Bob, his daughter Sarah, and son John, were in a tragic accident when a tractor trailer lost control and slammed into their car. Bob and Sarah were killed instantly. John lived a few hours and long enough to tell arriving helpers who to contact and who they all were. On that day, Alice lost the three most precious people in her life.
Their remains were flown back to the States in beautiful African handmade caskets for a combined funeral service at First Baptist Church of Milford, OH on Friday, August 21, 1998 at 9:00 a.m. There were hundreds of people in attendance. Bob's wife Alice showed God's mercy and strength in the hope she had of seeing them in Heaven one day. The three are buried side by side in a cemetery in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.

On Wednesday, August 12, 1998, in Nkawkaw, Ghana, God took Bob Hayes, his daughter, Sarah Hayes (Ivory Coast Academy '75), and his son, John Hayes (ICA '77), home to be with Him. Bob had come out from the States to be the key-note speaker for the first believers conference ever to be held in the Techiman, Ghana, area where John, his wife, Juleen (Swinborne ICA '77), and Sarah worked. John and Sarah were driving their dad back to Accra to return to the U.S. when their pick-up was struck head-on by a tractor trailer. Uncle Bob and Sarah were killed instantly. John was taken to the hospital at Nkawkaw, where he was able to tell the doctors how to find telephone numbers so they could notify the missionaries. At about 3:00 p.m. John was ushered on to Glory.
At the time Juleen and the kids were notified they believed John was still alive. The African laymen in their wisdom would not let Juleen jump in her car and take off. They arranged for some of them to go with her and for someone else to drive her. At about 6:30 that night they left for Nkawkaw. The roads were very bad and they could not make any time. They arrived at Nkawkaw around 11:30 p.m. It was then that missionary, Dan Mapes (ICA '82), told her that John was gone.
Surviving are Aunt Alice Hayes, Juleen Hayes and her three children. Michaela is 13; David is 11; and Rachelle is 6.
A memorial service was held in both Techiman and Accra. The Africans wept as they gave testimony of the impact that these three people had on their lives. A triple funeral was held at Uncle Bob's church in Milford, Ohio. It honored God and paid appropriate tribute to these three great friends or ours. One preacher said, "There is no need for long sermons and eulogies today, these three servants of God preached their own funeral sermons in the lives they lived". Draped across the choir pews directly behind the three caskets was a large flag of Ghana. It was a beautiful reminder of the land they loved and the people to which they had given their lives.
At this time Juleen and the kids are living with Aunt Alice Hayes in Milford, Ohio. The kids are enrolled in the Christian school there. Juleen plans to be in Ghana October 20-November 11, to take care of unfinished business. She says she would like to say she is going back again in the future, but she wants us all to pray that God will give her clear direction in that area.
