"Beat" was my maternal Grandmother. I never got to meet her as she passed away a few years before I was born. I wish I could have known her as I think we would have got on well. The descriptions I have of her were of a feisty, spirited woman who didn't much care what you thought of her as long as you respected her and thought nothing of swearing at the vicar if she thought he deserved it. She loved parrots and had three very fine specimens at various times, an African Grey, an Amazon Green and a Macaw. She obviously shared my Grandfather's skewed sense of humor as we have silent home movies of them wearing each other's bathing suits on holiday in the 1950's, my Gran in my Grandad's trunks and him in her frilly skirted one-piece.

She was born in Birmingham and married Frederick Walter Francis in 1933 in Pontypridd. Their only child, my Mum, was born in 1935. By trade, Gran was a professional tailor.

Gran contracted lung cancer and passed away after a long illness through which she was nursed by my Mum. She was reunited with Grandad in 1991.
