Pioneer settler. He is believed to have first arrived in the area around 1796 at Indian Landing, Irondequoit. He was the first person to settle and build a permanent residence in the 100 Acre Tract purchased from the Iroquois League of Nations which was incorporated as Rochesterville in 1812. The log cabin which he commissioned for his family was not ready when his family arrived and so they moved temporarily into a small shack built by Enos Stone in 1810. The Scrantom cabin was finished two months later and they moved in officially on July 4th 1812. It was located at the intersection of today's State and Main Streets, on the current site of the Powers Building. He was a founding member of the Pioneer Society of Rochester and Western NY, created on September 30th 1847 at the Blossom Hotel in Rochester. Membership was open to local residents who had lived in the area since before 1825. He had four sons, one of whom, Hamlet D., was elected Mayor of Rochester in 1860, and another, Edwin, founded Scrantom's Publishing Company and bookstore, which remained in business until the early 1990's.
According to burial records, he was living on State Street when he died of paralysis and was interred on 4/12/1850 in Section I Lot 12 (Edwin Scrantom's family plot), though his inscription appears on Hamlet D's family monument in Section G, where his headstone (and that of his wife, Hannah) are also located.
