Robert Edward Hubbard, Jr. was born in Liberty, Liberty, Texas. He was the only son of Robert Edward Hubbard, Sr. and Ethyl Mary (Duncan) Hubbard. He had three sisters, Robbie Lee, Annabelle and Billie Ruth. In the 1930 U.S. Census, R.E. was listed as living in Swink, Choctaw, Oklahoma with his family. His father was working in the oil field as a driller. By 1940, R.E. was twenty years old and working on a cattle ranch owned by William W. Pascoe in Cloverdale, Hidalgo, New Mexico. He later worked for his Uncle Robert L. Arrington and Aunt Louvenia (Hubbard) Arrington. They had a ranch west of Deming, N.M. The Hodge Family was living in Gage, New Mexico. They were family friends of the Hubbard's and Arrington's. In 1942, R.E. enlisted in the army. When he returned in 1945, he married Ruby Frances Hodge. They were married in Douglas, Arizona, where his parents lived. When their first son was born, R.E. was working for the U-Bar Ranch at Dog Springs near Animas, N.M. He later worked for his brother-in-law, John Janecka in Deming, N.M. Two more sons were born doing these years of working as a cowboy. Some of his later years, he worked in steel construction, which meant he had to go where the jobs were. Some of the places he worked were: Midland, TX, Phoenix, AZ (Citizens Police Patrol), Tuba City, AZ (one son born here), Hobbs, N.M., Crane, TX (daughter born here), Somerton, AZ, Tucson, AZ (family stayed while he worked on building the Glenn Canyon Bridge near Page, AZ), Hayden and Winkelman, AZ. His last two places of employment were ASARCO and Kennecott Copper Corp. He was a welder by trade. He also co-owned the B&F Sporting Goods Store there while he was working at ASARCO. The family first lived on A.S. & R. Hill in Hayden, and lastly along the Gila River in the Winkelman Flats, where they could have horses, raise animals and have a big garden. The family lived in the Hayden-Winkelman area for about ten years. During these years, R.E. had many friends and hobbies. He was a good roper as well as other rodeo events. He was an avid bowler, winning many trophies. The whole family enjoyed bowling at George Luman's, Tri City Bowl in Winkelman, AZ. R.E. also liked to hunt and fish. Most of the fishing was for catfish at the Salt River & Roosevelt Lake. The family also enjoyed fishing in the White Mountains during the summers. There were many memories made during his short life. R.E. died of lung cancer at age 48. He was buried in Deming, N.M. where they had lived. Ruby and the two youngest children moved back to be with her family.
