Captain John William Maloney was born on November 22, 1968 in Los Angeles, CA. At the age of three, the Maloney’s moved to Chicopee, MA, where John graduated from high school in 1986. At 17, John enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and reported to Parris Island, SC for Recruit Training in January of 1987. After receiving a meritorious promotion to Pfc on graduation, he received orders to Infantry Training School, Camp Lejeune where he was assigned a MOS of 0341. From July 1987 through October of 1988 he was assigned to Marine Barracks, Adak, AK. In November of 1988 Captain Maloney executed orders to Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division. He was assigned to the 81mm Mortar Platoon where he held a variety of billets to include: squad leader, forward observer, and Fire Direction Center Chief. During this time he was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant. He participated in 4 deployments while with 2/5: 2 UDP to Okinawa, Japan, a deployment to the Gulf War with 5th MEB, and finally actions in Somalia with the 11th MEU. Captain Maloney was accepted to the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program in 1994 and chose the University of Colorado, Boulder. During the summer of 1995, he attended Officer Candidate School, graduating the top 10% of his class. Photo Gallery Upon graduation from CU with a degree in Psychology, he was commissioned in August of 1996 and reported for training with BOC 6-96 (Fox Co) at The Basic School. Upon graduating in the top 10% of his class, he attended IOC 3-97 and completed the course in June 1997. Captain Maloney received orders to return to his roots at Second Battalion, Fifth Marines and reported for duty as the Weapons Platoon Commander, Golf Company. During this tour Captain Maloney deployed to Okinawa, Japan for participation with the 31st MEU(SOC). Upon return to CONUS, he took command of the 81mm Mortar Platoon from June of 1998 to May of 1999. He then assumed the responsibilities of Executive Officer for Weapons Company. Once again, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan for participation with the 31st MEU(SOC). Upon return to CONUS he reported to The Basic School in October of 2000. Captain Maloney spent his first six months at The Basic School as an Instructor in Warfighting. During this tenure, he was selected as The Basic School's Rose Award recipient for leadership excellence while on staff. He moved to Combat Instructor Company in March of 2001 and served as the Weapons Platoon Commander for a year. From April of 2002 to July of 2004, Captain Maloney performed instructor duties at the Infantry Officer Course.Captain Maloney was selected to attend the Expeditionary Warfare School from August 2003 to May 2004. Captain Maloney once again graduated in the top 10% of his class and received the Shipman Award for the Expeditionary Warfare School Ground Combat Arms Honor Student. Captain Maloney then reported for duty with the Fifth Marine Regiment. He served as the Regimental Assistant Operations Officer from May to July of 2004 and subsequently moved to assume duties as the Company Commander for Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines. On March 1st of 2005, Captain Maloney deployed to Ramadi, Iraq in support of the Second Marine Division while participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-06. While in Iraq, he commanded his reinforced company independently at the combat outpost Camp Snake Pit. Captain Maloney's decorations include: Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (w/ 4 gold stars), Good Conduct Medal (w/ 2 bronze stars), Marine Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal (w/ 2 bronze stars), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (w/ 3 bronze stars), United Nations Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Citation, Navy Meritorious Unit Foundation, Sea Service Deployment (w/ silver star), Overseas Service Ribbon. Captain Maloney is survived by his loving wife Michelle, his adoring children Nathaniel (6) and McKenna (1), his caring mother Lydia Maloney, his proud father John Maloney, and his admiring brothers Jason, Justin, and James.
