He was united in holy matrimony to Davida Mae (Goettsche) on April 20, 1952. This union was blessed with three children; David, Timothy and Clarissa. Davida preceded him in death on January 1, 1997.
He served in the United States Marine Corps for over twenty-two years. In that time, he participated in the Korean War and saw action at the Chosin Reservoir (becoming one of the Chosin Few). He also served two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the following; Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with five stars, Korean Service Medal with five stars, UN Service Medal, National Service Medal with one star, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Upon retirement from the Marine Corps in March 1970, he began preaching full time for the church of Christ. He preached his first sermon in 1957 and continued to preach part-time whenever and wherever he could. Over the combined fifty or so years, his preaching took him to North Carolina, California, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Oregon and Oklahoma. He continued to preach until August 2008 at which time he stepped down from fulltime work. Also, he was a life member of the Marine Corps League and spent a number of years as an active participant.
His wonderful life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children: David Ray Scroggins, of Houston, Texas, Dr. Timothy Allen Scroggins of Spencer, Ohio, Clarissa Hope Sarino of Georgetown, Texas; son-in-law, Roland G. Sarino of Georgetown, Texas; daughter-in-law Carol M. Scroggins of Salado, Texas; granddaughter Melissa M. Price and husband Mark Price of Houston, Texas; grandson John D. Scroggins of Bryan, Texas; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
