Elwyn (Bim) Robert Van Etten 85, gently entered into eternal rest after a long and courageous battle against multiple life threatening illnesses surrounded by his loving family on November 6, 2010 in Houston, TX. Born April 13, 1925 to Clyde Abram Van Etten and Ellen Reynalds Van Etten in Corning, NY. Most recently of Big Flats, NY. Predeceased by his cherished wife of 65 years, Virginia (Jini) Conant Van Etten, son John Robert Van Etten and his parents.

Survived by his devoted son Peter and wife Charleen (Charley)Van Etten; Granddaughter, Nicole Rawlins; Grandson, Brian Rawlins and Great grandson Drake Rawlins of Houston, TX. Also survived by sister-in-law Ms. Lois Van Etten, Penn Valley, CA; nephew Stephen (Sabrina) Van Etten, Grass Valley,CA; niece Laura (David) Collins, Grass Valley,CA

Bim was born in Corning and graduated from what was then Northside High School. He joined the U.S. Navy and saw action in both World War II and Korea. He graduated from Syracuse University and also spent time at Dartmouth and Harvard.

After starting a career with Corning Glass Works, now Corning Inc., he settled in Big Flats. Bim was always heavily involved in community activities- including Little League, Small Fry football, Boy Scouts, the town Parks Commission, as well as a longtime member of the American Legion, Corning Elks and Big Flats Lions Club.

After 20 plus years as a member of the Big Flats Lions, in 2010, he was the recipient of the Lions Club International Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for dedicated humanitarian services.

Bim was Big Flats town historian since 1993 and was honored in 2009 with (registered historian) status by the Association of Public Historians of New York State. He was also recognized and recipient of the Citizen of the Year award by the Town of Big Flats in 1996.

Bim volunteered over 10,000 hours at Steele Memorial Library in Elmira and was awarded the Booker Prize in 2004 for his volunteer service in the Genealogical department.

A memorial service will be held on December 4th, 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Big Flats at 95 Main St. Big Flats, NY. Reception luncheon immediately following at the Crystal House, Fisherville Road, Big Flats.

Remembrances go to Corning NY Meals on Wheels and the Big Flats Historical Society. Remembrances in Houston go to the Houston Food Bank 3811 East Tex Freeway 77026
