Ralph E. Bednar, 81, a resident of Heritage Manor, formerly of 305 W. Lincoln Ave., died at 10:03 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital.

Visitation will be 8:30-10 a.m. at Winterrowd-Hagi Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen's Church. The Rev. Jeffrey Lawrence will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Family members will be pallbearers.

Born November 24, 1921 in Streator, he was a son of Andrew J. and Veronica (Bavolar) Bednar.

Surviving are a sister: Theresa (Daniel) Barickman of Streator; five nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Andrew; and a nephew.

He was a graduate of St. Stephen's School, Streator High School and the University of Illinois.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1943-45.

He was a sports editor for the Ottawa Daily Times for 35 years.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Church and George A. Dzuryo Council #790 of the Knights of Columbus.
