Once an adult, Everett followed his father's footsteps into the railroad industry and worked as a Locomotive Fireman on the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad. He continued to work for the railroads until about 1930.
On April 15, 1915, Everett married Sophia "Mabel" Fredericks at Newark, New Jersey. Just one week prior, Everett's sister, Frances, married Mabel's brother, C. Herbert Fredericks, at Winthrop, Massachusetts.
In February 1916, Everett and Mabel had 1 daughter together, Edith Fredericks Belcher, born at Winthrop, Massachusetts. By March 1917, Everett and Mabel separated with Mabel and Edith moving in with family at Newark, New Jersey and Everett enlisting for military service shortly after the U.S. declared war against Germany in World War I. They eventually divorced abt. 1922.
On May 24, 1917, Everett enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Private in Company B, 14th Railway Engineers. After just a few weeks of military training camp, Everett set sail on the S.S. Adriatic for duty in France. He remained there for the remainder of the war, sailing home in April 1919. Soon after getting home he received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army.
On November 21, 1923, Everett married Anna Marie Bennett of the Verona and Bucksport areas of Maine. They had 3 children: Edward Cunningham; Jean Bennett; and Robert F.. Everett and Anna remained together until his death.
