Mrs. Abernathy began her nusing career in North Carolina, working both in Chapel Hill and Charlotte, then in Florence, SC. She was a homemaker, owner The Stichin Post in Marion, SC and later, the secretary for WACO Electric in Raleigh, NC. Since 1994, she considered it a privilege to be the primary caregiver for her daughter, Patti. She was a member of Crabtree Valley Church in Raleigh, NC. She was also a member of Marion Baptist Church, where she served as Sunday School Teacher for many years
