Russell was the son of George Robert Copping and his wife Emma Louise Black Copping. he married Hattie Iona Aldrich daughter of William and Fanny Aldrich, on the 10th of June 1914 in Peterborough. They made their home in Peterborough where Russell had expanded the family business, G R Copping and sons manufacturing. Russell's parents were lost in the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 and at that time he and his brother Norman continued to operate the family business. Russell lost his brother in 1921 and returned to Toronto head the Copping firm but the strain was too much and he lived but another five years.
