J.T. graduated from Tuscaloosa County High and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Sasebo, Japan and California and was a recipient of the Naval Service Medal and one Bronze Star. In civilian life, he was a skilled construction millwright and machinist. J.T. also had a flair for comical jobsite commentaries that brought smiles to coworkers around him.
