Two years later he re-joined the Union war effort, receiving a commission of 2nd Lieutenant in Company G, 6th United States Colored Cavalry on October 21, 1864. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on February 24, 1866, he was honorably mustered out on April 19, 1866.
He then accepted a commission in the Regular Army, being appointed as 1st Lieutenant in the 36th United States Infantry on August 6, 1867, serving until he resigned on April 7, 1869.
When he died in February 1890 he was serving as Superintendent of the New Mexico Penitentiary.
