Brother of Penn State University Football coaching legend, Joe Paterno. George was a star athlete at Brown University in his college days, and was also a U.S. Marine and a former NYC Police officer. Formerly defensive coordinator at Michigan State, in 1975 he left there to become a professor and athletic administrator until 1986. He broadcast the play by play for Penn State Football with Fran Fisher for many years on the radio and moved from Southampton, NY to State College in 1997 to be closer to his brother. He wrote a book, "The Coach from Byzantium" about his famous brother that same year.
He died in Centre Community Hospital 5 days after suffering a heart attack.
