One of the inmates who helped to protect the lives of guards and civilian employees at Attica Prison in NY during the infamous riot that lasted from SEPTEMBER 9, 1971 to SEPTEMBER 13, 1971, when 500 police officers retook the prison by force killing 32 inmates and 11 of their hostages. He was released from Attica in 1973 and became a tireless advocate for prison reform and helped lead the crusade for compensation for all the victims of this offical misconduct. On January 8, 2000 a 12 million dollar settlement was reached. He is credited by colleagues and foe's alike with being the one central person who made this possible.
