Fordyce Soldier Dies in Action in Vietnam
Danny Michael Gray, 20, of near Fordyce died in Vietnam last Thursday, October 30, according to a telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gray. Gray, who was a member of the U. S. Army, had been in Vietnam less than a month, as he left Little Rock on October 3 for the trip. The telegram said he was hit by sniper fire near Siagon and died in a hospital. He was a 1966 graduate of Thornton High School where he played basketball and was active in other school affairs. He had been in the Army only a short time and this was his first assignment following basic training at Fort Polk, La. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Foster and James Gray, both of Fordyce, and Charles Gray of Virginia; and four sisters, Mrs. Wesley (Amy Ruth) Little of Alabama, Mrs. Carroll (Linda) Childers of Texas, Mrs. Lamar (Brenda) Kitchen of El Dorado and Annie Gray of Fordyce. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Benton Funeral Home of Fordyce.

Awards Given Posthumously to Danny M. Gray The Silver Star, the nation's highest award for heroism, has been posthumously awarded to PFC Danny M. Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gray of Route Two, Fordyce. PFC Gray was cited for gallantry in action on military operations against an armed enemy of the United States while serving with Co. C, 27th Regt., 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Other medals and badges awarded PFC Gray included the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service, the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Combat Infantryman's Badge and marksmanship badges for the rifle, automatic rifle and machine gun. An officer of the U. S. Army presented the awards to Mr. and Mrs. Gray at their home last Saturday, February 22.
