In 1860 he purchased the Northern Military Hall with his brother, Frederick Ladner. Together they operated it as a concert saloon. It was located on Third and Brown Streets in Northern Liberties. During the Civil War it was used as an armory and a meeting place for militia, especially what was to become the 98th Pennsylvania Infantry.
Louis Ladner served first as Regimental Quartermaster of the 2nd Pennsylvania (Three-Month) Volunteer Infantry, serving from April 29, 1861 until his discharge three months later. He was then commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant of the 98th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being mustered in on September 30, 1861. He served until he was discharged on November 30, 1862.
He was member #1531 of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
