Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company I on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, then was promoted to Corporal on February 26, 1863. He served through the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.
