Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 28th 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in the 23rd Regiment (nicknamed "The Yahoos"), Company K on September 13th 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, then died of typhoid fever at the Regimental Hospital at White Oak Church, Virginia on January 19th 1863.

His brothers Samuel, Edward, Jesse, Michael and Lawrence all served in the NJ 10th, Co. K and all survived the war but James Jr.
