43rd Vermont Governor, US Senator. A businessman who made his fortune first in the leather goods industry, then in banking and railroads, he was elected as Governor of Vermont in 1890, and served until 1892. After his term he returned to his business concerns until 1908, when he was elected as a Republican Senator from Vermont to the United States Senate after the death in office of Senator Redfield Proctor. He was twice re-election, and served from 1908 until 1923.
