She was born March 3, 1914, and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Henry Clay Miller and Janet Goucher Miller.
Janet was married to Edwin Bernet who died in 1994.
After graduating from Smith College, Janet served in the Waves during World War II before marrying and moving to Charlottesville where she raised her family and pursued an active volunteer life. She was a member of the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary for more than 50 years and often worked in the canteen. Janet also served as Treasurer of the Needlework Guild for more than 30 years and was a longtime member of the American Association of University Women and the Wednesday Music Club.
She is survived by her children, Mary Fisher Bernet of New York City and Edwin John Bernet Jr. of Keene, New Hampshire; and a grandson, John Goucher Bernet of Baltimore, Maryland.
A celebration of Janet Bernet's life was held Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 190 Rugby Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
