Ogdensburg Journal - March 6, 1944
Staff Sergeant Elwyn R. McCargar is missing in action. The local youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. R. McCargar of 517 Albany Ave., arrived overseas just three months ago.

Stationed somewhere in England, Staff Sgt. McCargar, who finished fifth in his class at the Las Vegas Army Air Field last May, is a gunner-engineer. He was believed to be a member of a Liberator bomber crew.

The telegram from the War Department received here this morning stated briefly that the young Ogdensburg gunner is missing in action on a mission to Germany since February 20.

no further details were contained in the message from the Adjutant General who wrote: "The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Staff Sergeant Elwyn R. McCargar has been reported missing in action since the twentieth of February on a mission to Germany."

Strangely enough, the last letter received by Mr. and Mrs. McCargar was datemarked Feb 20 and apparently was written by their son just a few hours before taking part in an aerial mission over Germany.

Staff Sgt McCargar, last home in August, expressed his deepest wish to his family and friends here that he would soon be able to see action against the enemy either on the European front on in the Pacific.

Word received here the following December revealed that he was stationed in England and that his wish had been fulfilled.

Associated Press dispatches from London on February 1 told of the greatest American airforce attack on German war production yet staged.

Apparently Staff Sgt McCargar was part of the reported 2,000 plane attack that accounted for 126 enemy planes over the Reich in the greatest day-light air operation in history.

Associated Press reports of the raid state, "The tremendous American fleets, including 1,000 or more Flying Fortresses and Liberators, plus fighter support, hit at seven German aircraft center cities, and struck also at military installations in Rostock, on Germany's Baltic coast."

American losses according to the AP dispatch were 21 bombers and three fighters.

Young McCargar was well-known here. A graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, he took an active interest in school sports. The whole community will join with Mr. and Mrs. McCargar in the belief that news will be forthcoming soon that he is a prisoner of war.

Ogdensburg Journal - Jan 22, 1949
The body of Staff Sgt Elwyn McCargar, who was killed over Brunswick, Germany, Feb 20, 1944 on his thirteenth mission, arrived in Ogdensburg this morning at 8:45 accompanied by military escort Staff Sgt Andrew Wlodyka.

Members of the VFW, DAV, Legion of Guardsmen and the American Legion met the body and formed an escort accompanying the body to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald McCargar, 507 Albany Ave.

Funeral services will be held from the home of his parents Monday at 1:30pm and at 2 at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Melville D. Nesbit Jr., pastor, will officiate. Burial will be made in the family plot in Ogdensburg Cemetery.
