An undated dispatch passed by the censor in Italy and received last Wednesday by the Tribune Press noted the awarding of an air medal and an oak leaf cluster for meritorious achievement to Sgt Donald R. Outman, son of Mrs. Archie Outman, Heuvelton.
On July 3, 1944, Sgt Outman was reported as having been killed on a sortie from an Italian base over the enemy country of Romania.
The dispatch concerning the awards to Sgt Outman follows:
Staff Sgt Donald R. Outman, son of Archie Outman, Heuvelton, NY, nose gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber was recently awarded the Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster. The announcement of the award, held by airmen for meritorious achievement in sustained operational activity against the enemy, was made by Col E. L. Luton, group headquarters, Bellevile, Ill.
Sergeant Outman came overseas last April and since then has participated in major attacks on enemy targets throughout the southern European sphere of war. During his tour of duty he has compiled a record of 28 combat missions.
After graduation from Brier Hill High School in 1940, he attended the George Hall Trade School until 1942, when he accepted a position as machinist for the Remington Arms Co. Enlisting in the army on March 24, 1943, Sgt Outman trained at the armament school at Lowry Field, Denver, Col and the Tydall Field gunnery school, Fla.
