Army Spc.Hartge was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany. Hartge died of wounds sustained when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using grenades and an improvised explosive device. Nick had been a member of the marching band in school since the 8th grade and wrestled his senior year. The terrorist attacks of September 11 had a profound effect on him and led to his wanting to join the military. He wanted to do something special and was adamant about being in the Army – there was nothing that could stop him. Even before graduating in June 2005 from East Noble High School in Kendallville, Indiana, he enlisted in the Army. His family spoke proudly of how much Nick grew up after enlisting and how the Army had turned him into a man. Nick loved being around people and spending time with his friends and family. He liked fast cars, motorcycles and working on them. Nick also enjoyed listening to music, watching movies, liked guns, target shooting, water sports, boating, skiing, tubing, and a good work out to stay in shape. His unit was deployed to Iraq in August and he had returned home for a two-week leave in March. Nick believed in what he was doing and felt they were really helping the Iraqi people.
