Cpt. Timothy I. McGovern of Idaville, Indiana was a graduate of Twin Lakes High School in Monticello where he excelled in honors classes and especially loved social studies, history and economics. He also wreaked havoc on the gridiron and at the discus and shot put pits. He was a down and dirty lineman. Graduating from high school in 1997, he attended Purdue University and joined the ROTC, which was no surprise to his military family. Timothy's father, served in the Army, and distant cousins have also followed suit. The Eagle Scout was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation from Purdue University in 2001. He completed a Masters Degree at Webster University Mo. This was his second tour of duty in Iraq where he was the commander of a combat engineer company. His family has fond memories of Superbowl XLI, Feb. 4, in which the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Chicago Bears. That was the last time he was home. During the two week pass he came back to Idaville for Superbowl weekend. He was a Bears fan and a group of family and friends had gathered around the TV to watch the game. He was one of the few rooting for the Bears. Timothy was a month away from finishing his second tour of duty in Iraq and was in the process of buying a house in El Paso. He gave his life to his country and was doing the work he wanted to do. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Sapper Tab (Engineer). He was preceded in death by his grandmother Martha McGovern. Tim was killed in action while leading his troops in Mosul, Iraq at age 28.
