Physician. Royal Advisor. Born in the German kingdom of Coburg, he was educated as a physician, and became the personal physician of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1816 at the time of Leopold's marriage to the British Princess of Wales, Charlotte. After the princess died in childbirth in 1817, he took on the roles of the prince's political advisor and controller of his household. He took part in the ultimately unsuccessful negotiations to gain Leopold the throne in Greece and in promoting his successful candidacy for the throne of Belgium in 1830. At Leopold's request Stockmar, was created baron in 1831 by Antony, King of Saxony. He is alleged to have played a significant role in the arrangement of a marriage between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840, after which Stockmar became their unofficial counselor. In 1848 he was made ambassador of Coburg to the German parliament. His prominence in political circles led to resentment in Britain at what was seen to be German interference in English affairs. Stockmar, however, remained at the British court until his retirement to Germany in 1857 where he continued to dabble in politics, favoring the extension of Prussian influence. He continued to return to Britain occasionally and continued his role as unofficial adviser to the Queen.
