Poet's Muse. While few details are known of her life, in 1544, she was apparently serving as lady-in-waiting to the Queen Consort of Philip I of Portugal. While in Lisbon, the poet Luis de Camões saw Caterina in church, and legend has it, fell passionately in love with her. It has been said he considered her the great spiritual love of his life. In his sonnets, Camões was said to have disguised her name in the anagram Natercia. Sources differ on if Caterina returned his affection. In 1548, Camões was exiled from Lisbon, and in future, he dedicated his impassioned poetry to a series of lovers. Which Catarina of Ataíde in the queen's service he was dedicated to, however, appears problematic as there were at least two. The most likely was the daughter of Alvaro de Souza and Filipa de Ataíde; she married Rui Pereira de Miranda Borges, and died in 1551. A second option, however, was the daughter of Guiomar de Vilhena and Francisco da Gama, and the granddaughter of Vasco da Gama. Born about 1530, she eventually married Pedro de Noronha.
