Civil War Union Army Soldier. He served during the Civil War as a Private in Companies A and H, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry under the alias of "Charles A. Abrams".

On November 28, 1876 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #228103, Certificate #942433).

On May 19, 1904 his wife, Susan Conger, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #806676, Certificate #587941).

War Veteran Dies
Pneumonia Results Fatally in the Case of Charles A. Conger – Widow and Six Children

Charles A. Conger, a Civil war vet, who for the past 14 years had been a resident of this city, died at 8 o'clock last evening in the City hospital of pneumonia. He became seriously ill last Friday, and Sunday his condition was so critical that removal to the hospital was deemed advisable.

Mr. Conger was a well known Grand Army man. He was a member of the 137th Infantry during the Civil war.

He came to Ithaca from his former home at Five Corners, and since last September had been proprietor of billiard parlors in State street.

The deceased was 61 years old and is survived by his widow and six children. The funeral will be held from St. John's chapel on West hill at 2 p.m. Friday, with members of the G.A.R. in attendance.
