Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 12, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company F on August 23, 1861. He served three full years in the field, and was honorably discharged on September 16, 1864, when his enlistment expired. In March 1865 he again joined the Union war effort, enlisted in the 40th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on March 16, 1865. First mustered in as a Private in Company B, he was transferred to Company H, and served through the conclusion of the war. He was discharged at Augur United States Army General Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia on July 15, 1865.
