Wayne F. Timmerman served in the Army for nearly 33 years with service in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was assigned command sergeant major at Fort Drum in October 1969 and retired as post command sergeant major June 30, 1975.

His previous assignments included the U.S. embassy in Paris; battalion command sergeant major in Vietnam and at Fort Bragg, N.C., and command sergeant major in Korea, as well as administrative supervisor at Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Monroe, Va., and Continental Army Command.

He received the National Defense Service Medal with first oak leaf cluster, Korean Service Medal, Expert Rifle badge for M-14 and M- 16, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign with 60 Device, Good Conduct Medal with Silver Clasp/5 loops and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Also, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, three overseas bars, Army Commendation Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Army Occupation Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, World War II Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal.

Following his Army career, he was a salesman for various companies in the north country for several years.

He was a member of the Italian- American Civic Association, and an honorary member of the state troopers and sheriffs associations. He was a member of the Watertown Disabled American Veterans, Watertown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1400, Black River American Legion, International Police Association, Buffalo, the Carthage Elks Lodge and Masonic Lodge, Moslah Temple Shrine, Fort Worth, Texas.

Born Nov. 4, 1923, in the town of Orleans, son of Fredrick and Marion Sims Timmerman, he graduated from high school, worked for a time as a bellhop at the Hotel Woodruff in Watertown and was drafted into the Army in 1943.

He graduated from the Adjutant General's School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind., and studied Czechoslovakian at the Department of Defense Language School at Presidio of Monterey, Calif.

He married Betty J. Alexander on April 20, 1947, at Sackets Harbor with town Justice Ira W. Stokes officiating.

The couple resided throughout the United States and Europe, moving to Black River in the early 1970s.
