First native New Mexican elected to Congress. A graduate of Pingree's College in New York, he studied law in St. Louis, Missouri and was admitted to the bar in 1851; practiced law in Albuquerque; then became a member of New Mexico Territorial House of Representatives from 1852 to 1854; in 1854 attorney general of New Mexico Territory; was a delegate to U.S. Congress from New Mexico Territory from 1856 thru 1861; he was appointed by President Lincoln as secretary of the New Mexico Territory and Acting Governor from 1861 to 1862. Merchant and banker in the West after that.
