Cowboy Author. After a widely varied career as a cowboy and Pinkerton detective, he wrote many books based on his experiences, including "Riata and Spurs," "A Texas Cowboy" and "A Cowboy Detective." He was born in Matagorda County in 1855 and went on to become a cowboy before ending up a lawman and a Pinkerton detective. His undercover work with Pinkerton remains some of the first examples of the use of undercover work in the capture of fugitives. He was also a writer, and his accounts of trail drives and the detective fiction he wrote later in life are still available online.
