Civil War Union Army Officer. He enlisted in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry after the outbreak of the Civil War, and was made one of the regiment's original officers, being commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of Company H on June 13, 1861. He served in the capacity until February 1862, when he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant to replaced Lt. William Spence, who resigned. After the hard campaigning in the 1862 Penninsular Campaign, the 2nd Bull Run Campaign, and the Battles of South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg, he was promoted to Captain and commander of Company B on February 17, 1863 when Captain Richard Cook resigned. He served as leader of Company B in the Battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run and in the Spring 1864 Overland Campaign. On June 23, 1864 his enlistment expired, and he was honorably mustered out, having served three full years in the war.
