Samuel Baker died this morning -- was township constable, and old settler and Civil war veteran.

There were universal expressions of surprise and regret on the streets this morning when the news became public that Sam Baker was dead. He was on the streets Wednesday apparently in good health as usual, but complained of to intimate friends that he was suffering from neuralgia in his arm. Later in the day it changed to his chest and on the advice of friends he started to his home, 412 south Jefferson. Before he reached home he became exhausted and had to be assisted. He lingered through the night and died about 7 o'clock this morning. His stepson Charlie Clark was telegraphed for at Parsons and funeral arrangements will be made after his arrival.

Samuel Baker was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1840. He enlisted as a private in Co. C, 81st Indiana V.I., August 13, 1862, and was discharged for disability, December 28, 1863. He came to Kansas in 1874 and has lived at Iola most of the time since then. He was an honest, straightforward man whom everybody liked and trusted.

Later: The funeral services will be held at the Baptist church at four o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The G.A.R. and the Knights of Pythias will attend in a body, and will conduct the ritual exercises of their respective bodies at the cemetery. The funeral sermon at the church will be preached by Rev. D.B. Shuey.
