The first of two children born to Martin Bohen and Harriett Ryan, Martin moved with his family from Platte County, Nebraska to Downey, California around 1892. On February 15, 1906, he married Louise Keturah Whims at "Walnut Cottage," the home of her father Newton at 1156 West 36th Street, in Los Angeles. They lived in Downey, where Martin was a fruit farmer, and had three children: Edith, Dorothy, and Robert. Martin died tragically young, of cancer.
