son of Louisa Maria Wilhelmina (Kiene) and Herman Dickman both of whom were born in Germany. After his mother's death his father remarried a young widow with a daughter, Mary (Cain) Gallee by whom he had another seven children. He was ordained a minister of the Gospel in the Northern Baptist Church and worked as a missionary throughout the state of Illinois. Living for two years in a community until the church was built up his family and he would then move on to another church until it was established. He was first the husband of May Viola Holbrook, married 1892 and by whom he had four children: Walter; Marie; Ellamae; and Howard; he then married in 1916 Sarah Badley MacArthur by whom he had one daughter Beatrice Louise Dickman.
