George Wilford Blake, 73, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Hernando Pasco Hospice Care Center in Dade City, Fla.
Born Dec. 6, 1936, in Muscatine, he was the son of Calvin Blake and Dorothy Torbert. On Dec. 31, 1955, he married Margaret "Marge" Ball in Iowa City.
Mr. Blake was a truck driver for 30 years and retired from Yellow Freight Co. He was a member of Teamsters Local 218. He served in the Navy for seven years aboard the USS Hornet, USS Intrepid and on the USS Boxer during the Korean War. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing cards, and he loved watching football, especially the Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steven Blake of Wichita, Kan., and Gary Blake of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four daughters, Lori Cooper, Shelly Moyers and Julie Byars, all of Burlington, and Lisa Gosney of Lomax, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Nancy Blaylock of St. Louis; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. There was no memorial service. His family had a private gathering.
A memorial has been established for Hernando Pasco Hospice Care Center in Dade City.
Whitfield Funeral Home in Zephyrhills was in charge of arrangements.
