I believe that two families have been "spliced" together to form a spurious relationship.

I believe that Mahala Lunsford Dockery is the daughter of Eli Lunsford (b. 1784, NC) and Mary Ann Henderson (b. about 1795, NC), and therefore not the daughter of John Lunsford #51815921 and Elizabeth Massie Lunsford #127824614. When I looked through Ancestry.com for confirmation, I found the incorrect relationship perpetuated citing the Find A Grave Index.

This is what I wrote in FamilySearch to resolve the issue:

RESOLUTION OF CONTRADICTORY EVIDENCE.
a. The parentage of Mahala Lunsford (about 1810-1880) LHQD-D3H is in question. The parents are either Eli Lunsford (1784-1850) LHQC-5CQ and Mary Ann Henderson (1796-1860) LRRB-QTT, or in the alternative, John Lunsford (1776-1848) KCYX-W51 and Elizabeth Massie (1790-1842) K8Y2-1FY. Of course, one or the other set is the correct parents, or neither are the correct parents.
b. My research of the case indicates that Eli and Mary Ann are both from, lived-in, died, and were buried in North Carolina, just like Mahala. John and Elizabeth’s lives centered around Belmont County, Ohio. Therefore, it is improbable that John and Elizabeth were Mahala’s parents. So how previous researchers get it wrong? The “Find A Grave Index” memorial 2547875 for Mahala Lunsford Dockery points to John and Elizabeth as the parents. The problem is that it is improbable and should be corrected.
c. My evaluation is only of the extant file information, and not based on additional research. John and Elizabeth are probably not the parents of Mahala (b. 1810, North Carolina and who m. Thomas Dockery), based on geographic information. Eli and Mary Ann are apparently the parents of Mahala, based also on geographic information. Therefore, I will proceed to amend the file to reflect this. Should any new evidence surface supporting a different outcome, please enter the discussion. qm dave.

I am a descendant of John Lunsford and Elizabeth Massie, who did have a daughter Mahala (b. about 1815, OH). The evidence is scant on her, but maybe I will find more in the future.

So, I recommend that you remove John Lunsford #51815921, Elizabeth Massie Lunsford #127824614, Samuel Lunsford #119243827, and Sara J. Vess #9443247 from the memorial page.

Thank you and Merry Christmas.
