B. J. Carnes died Saturday, July 5, 2008 at around 8:00 p.m. when his single-engine, red-white-and-blue plane crashed during a private Independence Day event near Valera at the T-bone Ranch in Coleman County.

Benny Jay Carnes, Jr. was born on March 26, 1970 in Brownwood, Texas to Ben Carnes and Nona Gayl Rippetoe.

He grew up in Bangs, Texas with his sister Carmon Gayl Carnes and graduated from Brookesmith High School.

He attended several colleges until he received his license in counseling.

B. J. married Jenny R. Long on August 21, 1999 in Bangs. They shared the most precious God sent gift, Mackenzie Carnes. She was born on March 10, 1994 to B. J. and Marcella L. Kay Cutright.

B. J.'s passions in life were flying airplanes, fighting fires and being the most awesome husband and dad.

He had many friends and will be greatly missed by all.

He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bangs and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).

B. J. had been a member of Brownwood Fire and Rescue since 2005.

B. J. passed from this life on Saturday, July 5, 2008 in Coleman County at age 38.
