SSG Ronald N. Richerson, age 24, a 1987 Portage High School graduate, from Portage, Indiana, a member of the 300th Military Police Company, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, was a military policeman for six years. Died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1993, he leaves behind a wife and two sons.

SSG Richerson, whose unit was one day away from rotating out of southern Mogadishu, the Somalian capital city. Richerson had been in Somalia since April serving as a squad leader with the 300th Military Police Company. While providing an orientation reconnaissance patrol for his replacements, a land mine blew apart the military vehicle transporting him and three other soldiers. He was one of four soldiers who died in the blast in southern Mogadishu. SGT Richerson was posthumously promoted to SSG.

Local services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday for Army Staff Sgt. Ronald N. Richerson at First Southern Baptist Church, 5785 Mulberry Ave., Portage, IN. People who knew Sgt. Ronald Richerson before he donned an Army uniform remembered him as an unpretentious, serious-minded, hard-working young man. He delivered newspapers, mowed lawns and bagged groceries to earn money throughout his teens. Full military honors will be accorded the slain soldier by Army personnel from Fort Knox, Ky.
