Elected to Represented IA’s 1st District in the House of Representatives, serving from 1887 to 1891. Appointed as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during the Benjamin Harrison Administration, serving from 1892 to 1893. Elected as a Senator from Iowa, serving from 1895 until his death in office in 1900.
